Description

The C502SS1 is a quartz stoppered cuvette with 50 mm path length and two-way light optical configuration — two opposite vertical faces are polished to optical grade, forming the standard transmission geometry for UV-Vis absorbance measurements. With a standard 17.5 ml internal volume (10 × 10 × 43 mm chamber), the cell is compatible with most commercial spectrophotometers. Fabricated using Sintered 83 (>83% transmittance) — quartz panels are thermally fused at approximately 600 °C, producing joints free of organic adhesive. The PTFE stopper seals the cuvette opening, preventing evaporation of volatile samples and protecting air-sensitive or hygroscopic solutions during measurement.

Why Two-Way Light?

The two-way configuration polishes two opposite vertical faces to optical grade — the standard geometry for UV-Vis absorbance (transmission) measurements. The excitation beam passes through one polished face, traverses the sample path, and exits through the opposite polished face to the detector. The two non-polished (frosted) faces reduce stray-light scatter, improving photometric accuracy. This is the most common and cost-effective configuration for routine absorbance work.

PTFE Stopper

The PTFE stopper creates an airtight seal over the cuvette opening, preventing solvent evaporation during extended measurements and protecting air-sensitive or hygroscopic samples from atmospheric exposure. PTFE is chemically inert to virtually all laboratory solvents and contributes no background absorbance or fluorescence, ensuring clean spectra. The stopper fits snugly by friction and can be removed and replaced one-handed for rapid sample exchange. Ideal for volatile solvents, long kinetic runs, and any application where maintaining sample concentration and composition is critical.

Why Sintered 83 Construction?

Sintered 83 cuvettes are assembled by thermally fusing precision quartz panels at approximately 600 °C, eliminating organic adhesive from the joints. The resulting cuvette is compatible with strong acids, bases, and most organic solvents (excluding HF and aggressive organics such as toluene and acetone). With transmittance >83%, optical performance surpasses adhesive-bonded alternatives. Sintered construction is the preferred choice when solvent resistance is required but the higher cost of fully molded cuvettes is not justified.

Usage Tips: Handle by non-optical surfaces only — fingerprints on polished faces introduce scattering artifacts. Ensure the stopper is fully seated before inverting or transporting the cuvette. Sintered 83 construction is compatible with strong acids, bases, and most organic solvents (excluding HF and aggressive organics such as toluene and acetone). Compatible with Shimadzu, Agilent, PerkinElmer, Thermo Fisher, JASCO, Hitachi, Horiba, Edinburgh Instruments, and most commercial spectrophotometers.
