Quartz Mortar and Pestle: Specifying a Sample-Preparation Set
Custom Design Guides · MQQMR001
A mortar is part of sample preparation, before the material is loaded into a measurement holder. MQQMR001 is a quartz mortar with a matching grinding rod; the reference marks the mortar envelope as 90 × 50 mm.
The chamber, rod and sample need to be considered together. Choosing quartz does not by itself establish the amount of material released during grinding, a final particle size or suitability for every sample hardness.

The configuration discussed here
What changes from the simpler form?
A mortar is a working pair of chamber and rod rather than a passive sample container. The useful specification therefore includes their contact and the recovery route, alongside the chamber dimensions.
Start with the material and the required preparation
Describe the sample form, amount and the result the subsequent measurement needs. Crushing a larger piece, mixing a powder and preparing a particular particle-size distribution are different tasks. The vessel drawing cannot substitute for a preparation method.
If contamination matters to the analysis, identify the material to be avoided and the required blank or carryover assessment. The quartz designation is not evidence of a contamination-free result from the complete grinding process.
Specify the chamber with the rod
The rod needs access to the intended sample area while leaving room to manipulate and recover the sample. Supply the chamber form, tool-head envelope and any access restriction together. Overall mortar diameter does not describe the usable chamber on its own.
For a proposed custom chamber, identify the surfaces to retain and the region that needs a different profile. A different rod head is a matching-part request, not an automatic accessory for any mortar of the same outside size.
Recovery and cleaning are part of the selection
Explain how the prepared material will be removed and where residual sample would be unacceptable. If a particular cleaning tool or procedure is already used, include its access requirements and relevant sample conditions.
A proposed recovery or cleanliness check should use the laboratory method and agreed criteria. Do not infer a recovery percentage, reuse life or cleaning compatibility from a smooth-looking surface.
A custom set needs a clear delivered-parts list
For example, a customer may need to keep the available bench or enclosure footprint while changing the chamber depth. Show that footprint and describe the sample amount and rod access. MQ can then review the vessel and tool together.
Confirm the supplied rod, critical dimensions and any requested material or inspection record in the quotation. The proposed checks are specific to the order rather than proof that this reference set has been tested for the customer's sample.

Does a quartz mortar guarantee that grinding introduces no contamination?
No. The sample, tool contact, wear and cleaning method need to be assessed for the analytical requirement. Specify the relevant contamination limit and how the process will be checked.
Send a drawing or the mating-part details
Request the mortar and rod as one preparation set. Include the sample and recovery requirements so MQ can discuss the chamber geometry in the context of its actual task.
- Sample form, amount and required preparation outcome
- Chamber and rod contact geometry
- Available footprint and tool-access space
- Recovery and cleaning method requirements
- Material evidence, quantity and agreed inspection scope
Modified designs are reviewed for the project. The drawing, supplied parts, quantity, inspection scope, price and preparation or production time are agreed in the quotation.
Details to settle for the ordered configuration
Sample compatibility, wear, final particle size, contamination and cleaning performance are not established by the dimensional reference.
