Square Quartz Light-Guide Rod: Separating End Faces from Mounting Areas
Custom Design Guides · MQOLG001
A solid quartz rod has a different task from a liquid-filled cuvette. MQOLG001 is the square rod option marked 6.5 × 6.5 × 50 mm. Its ends and side surfaces need to be described in relation to the proposed optical arrangement.
The outside dimensions identify the reference form. They do not establish a transmission efficiency, numerical aperture, surface-quality grade or usable wavelength range for a particular setup.

In this guide: Configuration · Design comparison · Identify what each end must meet · Keep the support out of the optical requirement · Changing the rod is not only a size change · Ask for the evidence the application needs · Enquiry
The configuration discussed here
What changes from the simpler form?
A solid square rod is a different optical form from a hollow tube or sample cell. Its end faces and mounting regions become the relevant interfaces; the square outline does not define a liquid space.
Identify what each end must meet
Show the proposed input and output arrangement on a sketch, including any adjacent component and the required separation. Give the usable area needed on each end rather than assuming the whole outside section is available to the beam.
If the ends need a particular finish, orientation or dimensional relationship, specify it. A clear product view does not establish those optical tolerances or a measured coupling result.
Keep the support out of the optical requirement
A holder touches the rod somewhere, so mark the intended contact regions as well as the optical regions. If the side surfaces have a functional role in the proposed design, make that explicit before choosing where a clamp or support will sit.
For example, a customer might need the existing square section to fit a holder while requesting a different exposed length. The drawing should locate the holder and the two end faces, not just give a new overall length.
Changing the rod is not only a size change
Retaining the section while changing the length may also change the installed position of an end face. State which datum must stay fixed and where the adjacent components must meet. MQ can then discuss the requested geometry with the optical and mechanical requirements together.
Do not assume that a material or size change preserves the performance of an existing light guide. Describe the intended wavelength and the result that needs verification, with its method and acceptance criteria.
Ask for the evidence the application needs
If transmission, end-face geometry or another optical property is important, define the conditions of the requested measurement. A general quartz property or a temperature printed in a marketing image is not a test result for this rod.
Agree the critical dimensions and any available optical or material documentation before quotation. A proposed check should refer to the ordered component and its actual functional regions.

Can the 50 mm length be treated as a guaranteed optical path?
It is the reference component length. The optical route and acceptance conditions depend on the arrangement. Define the input, output, usable regions and required performance separately.
Send a drawing or the mating-part details
Send an optical-layout sketch with the holder contacts marked. MQ can review the rod geometry without confusing component length with a qualified system result.
- Required section, length and locating datum
- Input and output component geometry
- Usable end-face areas and side-surface requirements
- Holder contact regions and installed envelope
- Wavelength, acceptance method, quantity and documentation
Modified designs are reviewed for the project. The drawing, supplied parts, quantity, inspection scope, price and preparation or production time are agreed in the quotation.
Details to settle for the ordered configuration
Material grade, surface quality, transmission, coupling behaviour and operating limits need product-specific confirmation.
