XRD Glass Sample Recess: Planning a Cover over a Powder Sample
Custom Design Guides · MQXRD060
MQXRD060 is the square-recess glass-slide option for discussing powder XRD sample placement. The selected recess is nominally 10 × 10 × 0.5 mm; the separate cover or sealing accessory is not automatically included with this slide.
The important relationship is between the prepared sample surface, the holder and any covering layer. A recess dimension alone does not establish the surface position in the instrument or a verified air-isolation result.

The configuration discussed here
What changes from the simpler form?
A recess in a glass slide defines a sample-loading region within a larger holder interface. Adding a cover creates another layer in the measurement arrangement, whose inclusion and background contribution need separate review.
Locate the sample surface from the instrument holder
A shallow recess helps define where powder is placed, but the filled surface needs a reference in the actual holder. Give the seating surface, the required sample level and the area to be illuminated. Do not use the recess bottom as the instrument datum unless that relationship is defined.
Yale's XRD preparation guidance identifies a flat sample surface and suitable particle orientation as preparation concerns. That general guidance is not a measurement or qualification of this slide; the laboratory method still determines its loading requirements.

Treat the cover as part of the measurement request
If restricting sample exposure is important, identify the proposed covering material, its position and how it is retained. Ask for the cover's effect on the actual measurement to be assessed using the relevant blank or background procedure.
Covering strips are separate from the selected slide unless the quotation includes them. List the slide and covering components separately in the enquiry and confirm the delivered set.
Changing the recess starts with the sample task
For example, a customer may need to retain an existing slide footprint while changing the recess to suit a limited amount of powder. Give the instrument's sample-position reference, required illuminated area and loading method, not just a new cavity volume.
MQ can review the proposed recess and cover arrangement. The resulting geometry is not automatically suitable for another diffractometer simply because it fits a similar rectangular holder.
Define what air isolation must mean for the method
A cover is not proof of a specified seal. If the sample has an atmosphere requirement, state the permissible exposure, preparation sequence and verification needed. Those conditions need review before a closure claim can be made.
Likewise, agree the critical slide and recess dimensions, material requirements and any inspection record. The reference is a design and loading discussion, not a completed diffraction result or certified sealed sample environment.

Are the covering strips shown in the family image included with this recess option?
They are separate accessories unless the ordered set explicitly includes them. Confirm the slide, covering material and any retaining parts as individual items, with their measurement and closure requirements.
Send a drawing or the mating-part details
Send the holder section and sample-surface requirement with the recess request. MQ can then review the glass slide and proposed cover without confusing a cavity dimension with instrument fit or sealing.
- Instrument holder and sample-surface datum
- Powder amount, loading method and illuminated area
- Recess and outside slide dimensions
- Cover material, retention and atmosphere requirement
- Background or dimensional checks, quantity and supplied set
Modified designs are reviewed for the project. The drawing, supplied parts, quantity, inspection scope, price and preparation or production time are agreed in the quotation.
Details to settle for the ordered configuration
Cover effects, atmosphere control, exact holder compatibility and process qualification require confirmation.
