Quartz Sample Insert with a Locating Boss: Defining the Mating Recess
Custom Design Guides · MQQCU012
MQQCU012 is the small quartz-insert reference with a lower locating boss. The reference view marks a 5.5 mm top span, but its dimensional axis should be confirmed before treating it as a diameter.
The distinctive feature is the mating relationship below the upper body. The boss, seating face and surrounding recess need to be specified together.

The configuration discussed here
What changes from the simpler form?
A lower boss adds a local locating interface beneath a small insert. The mating recess and seating plane become separate requirements from the upper sample or optical region.
Choose the surface that locates the insert
Show whether the proposed fixture locates on the boss, a shoulder or another defined face. A projecting feature and a flat seating region can provide different references.
Give the mating recess and the required clearance in section. The top span alone does not specify insertion depth, lateral fit or the final height of the active region.
Leave a practical removal route
A small insert may be easy to place and difficult to recover from a close recess. Show the exposed edge or other access available to the intended handling tool.
Identify the regions that may be contacted. Do not assume that a small quartz projection can serve as a gripping handle or carry an undefined load.
Keep the sample space independent of the boss
The locating feature does not establish a sample capacity or optical path. Mark the proposed sample region and any required viewing direction separately.
For example, a revised lower boss could be discussed to suit a fixture while preserving the upper region needed by the method. That proposal requires the exact mating geometry and the surfaces to retain.
Use dimension endpoints that can be inspected
Confirm the reference axes for the top span and the local height marks before producing a tolerance drawing. Avoid turning an ambiguous width into a diameter or adding local heights without a defined section.
MQ can review the locating arrangement with dimensional and delivered-condition checks. Any optical or sample-handling result needs its own requirement rather than being inferred from the insert's size.

Does the 5.5 mm mark define the locating-boss diameter?
The available mark refers to a top span. Its axis and the boss dimensions need confirmation on a section drawing before specifying a mating recess.
Send a drawing or the mating-part details
Send the mating recess with the intended seating surface highlighted. MQ can review the locating boss as an interface rather than an isolated small dimension.
- Mating recess and seating-face section
- Boss dimensions and required clearance
- Confirmed axes for all reference marks
- Handling access and allowed contact regions
- Sample or optical task and dimensional acceptance
Modified designs are reviewed for the project. The drawing, supplied parts, quantity, inspection scope, price and preparation or production time are agreed in the quotation.
Details to settle for the ordered configuration
Dimensional axes, boss geometry, capacity, optical path and fixture compatibility require confirmation.
