Aluminium-Coated K9 Right-Angle Prism: Specifying the Turning Surface
Custom Design Guides · MQOPR005
MQOPR005 is listed as a K9 right-angle prism with an aluminium-coated reflecting arrangement. It belongs with the optical components around a measurement, rather than the quartz vessels that hold the sample.
Use the nominal 10 mm size option to identify the reference, then specify the faces that light must enter, meet and leave. The repeated size notation in a product label should not be interpreted as three equal sides of a right triangle.

The configuration discussed here
What changes from the simpler form?
A prism changes the direction-interface discussion from parallel window faces to a defined set of angled optical faces. Which face reflects and where the holder may contact must be specified for the proposed arrangement.
Name the reflecting face in the layout
Draw the intended incoming and outgoing light directions and identify the face intended to provide the reflection. The word prism does not specify the complete arrangement, and a coating description does not identify every usable face.
Include the adjacent optics and any required clear areas. A holder can fit the outside size while covering the region the beam needs, so the optical layout and mounting drawing should be considered together.
Keep coating performance separate from geometry
A material and coating name do not establish reflectance at a particular wavelength, a coating-protection scheme or the quality of the outgoing beam. If the method depends on those properties, state the measurement conditions and acceptance requirement.
Do not adopt an unqualified total-reflection claim from a product label as a test result. The proposed coated reflection arrangement needs its own optical specification.
Mark the faces available for support
Identify which faces may meet a holder and which must stay clear of contact. Include the allowed contact areas, orientation and any restraint requirement. The outside size alone does not define a suitable clamping method.
For a replacement, provide the existing prism drawing or the mating holder. The nominal 10 mm option cannot establish interchangeability with another optical component of a similar apparent size.
Changing the prism for an existing instrument
A possible custom brief is to retain the required optical turning arrangement while reviewing the outside envelope or clear aperture for a holder. Mark the features that must remain fixed and the available mechanical space.
MQ can discuss the proposed geometry, materials, coating requirements and requested checks. The final drawing and optical acceptance conditions should identify what is ordered rather than relying on a catalogue-size label.

Is K9 another name for quartz?
No. This option is listed as K9 optical glass. If quartz or a specific spectral requirement is needed, state that as a separate material and performance request for review.
Send a drawing or the mating-part details
Send the optical layout with the mounting section. MQ can review the prism as a turning component with defined faces and contacts.
- Incoming and outgoing optical layout
- Identified reflecting face and required clear areas
- Material, coating and wavelength requirements
- Holder contacts, orientation and dimensional limits
- Optical acceptance method, quantity and documentation
Modified designs are reviewed for the project. The drawing, supplied parts, quantity, inspection scope, price and preparation or production time are agreed in the quotation.
Details to settle for the ordered configuration
Coated-face identity, dimension axes, angle error, surface quality, reflectance and operating conditions require confirmation.
