Description

The C102CM is a quartz (fused silica) 10 mm standard-path cuvette built for UV-Vis and NIR spectrophotometry across 190–2500 nm. The two-window configuration — two opposing polished optical faces with two frosted sides — is the canonical geometry for absorbance measurements using Beer–Lambert calculations. Frosted faces eliminate internal reflections and lateral stray light, which keeps the baseline flat even at the low-absorbance limit (A < 0.05).

This SKU uses Sintered 83 fabrication — high-purity synthetic quartz fused at ~600 °C without adhesive. That gives you >83% transmittance at 200 nm, meeting the threshold required by USP <857> and Ph. Eur. 2.2.25 photometric methods. Why Sintered 83 over Standard 80 or Sintered 80?

MachinedQuartz fabricates four cuvette tiers differentiated by bond construction and quartz purity. Standard 80 uses UV-cured optical adhesive — cheapest, fine for room-temperature aqueous samples but fails above 100 °C and dissolves in organic solvents. Sintered 80 swaps the glue for a powder-fusion seam at ~600 °C, giving full chemical resistance and 600 °C operating limit at modest cost increase. Sintered 83 (this SKU) keeps the seamless build but upgrades to high-purity synthetic quartz, raising deep-UV transmission from ~80% to >83% at 200 nm — the threshold pharma QC and protein-quantification methods specify. Molded 83 is a one-piece monolithic cell with no seams at all, rated to 1200 °C for OEM and process applications. Why This Cuvette?

The two-way light configuration (two polished optical faces, two frosted sides) provides clean absorbance measurements with minimal stray light. The frosted faces reduce internal reflections and scattering, improving baseline stability and signal-to-noise ratio — particularly important for low-absorbance measurements near the detection limit. The standard 10 mm path length provides direct Beer-Lambert law compliance (A = εlc), making concentration calculations straightforward without correction factors.

Usage Tips: Handle the cuvette by its frosted (non-optical) sides to avoid fingerprints on the polished windows. Fill to at least 15 mm above the beam center height to avoid meniscus effects in the light path. Clean with spectroscopic-grade solvent and lint-free tissue after each use. For aqueous samples, rinse with deionized water first, then solvent. Avoid prolonged ultrasonic cleaning which can stress the optical bonds over time. Store upright in the original case when not in use. Is the C102CM compatible with my Hellma 100-QS or Starna Type 1 holder?
Yes. The C102CM has the same external dimensions (12.5 × 12.5 × 45 mm) and 10 mm internal path length as the Hellma 100-QS and Starna Type 1 standard cuvettes, so it drops directly into any cuvette holder designed for these references — Shimadzu UV-1900, Agilent Cary, PerkinElmer Lambda, Thermo Genesys, JASCO V-series. The Z dimension (beam-center height of 15 mm) is the international standard.
Why choose Sintered 83 over Standard 80 for this path length?
Sintered 83 has no organic adhesive at the joints — the quartz pieces are powder-fused at 600 °C — so it survives organic solvents (acetone, DMSO, methanol) and temperatures up to 600 °C. Standard 80 uses UV-cured glue that fails above 100 °C and dissolves in solvents. The 83% transmittance at 200 nm also meets USP <857> and Ph. Eur. 2.2.25 method validation requirements that Standard 80’s ~80% does not.
How do I clean a quartz cuvette without scratching the optical windows?
Rinse immediately after use with the same solvent used in your measurement, then flush 2–3 times with deionized water followed by spectroscopy-grade ethanol or acetone. Air-dry inverted on lint-free tissue or use dry nitrogen gas. For stubborn residue, soak in 1–5% nitric acid for 15–30 minutes. Never wipe optical windows with paper tissue (causes permanent scratching) and never use HF (etches quartz). Sintered 83 cells are safe for ultrasonic cleaning, unlike adhesive-bonded Standard 80.
Does this cuvette work for fluorescence measurements?
No. The C102CM is a 2-window cuvette (two polished optical faces, two frosted sides), built for absorbance / UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Fluorescence requires a 4-window cell with all four sides polished so excitation and emission can travel perpendicular paths.
