50 mm Five-Face Quartz Cuvette: Choosing the Optical Direction (MQQFL032)
Custom design guide · MQQFL032
A broad chamber provides nominal 50 mm and 10 mm sample directions. Choose the optical direction first, then allow for the wider holder footprint and the liquid level needed by the method.

Choose which direction the light must travel
MQQFL032 is a configuration to assess when a standard square cell does not provide the sample path or optical access needed by the setup. Its 52.5 × 12.5 × 45 mm exterior contains nominal 50 mm and 10 mm sample directions, with five transmission faces and a separate flat lid.
For an absorbance measurement within Beer–Lambert conditions, a longer path increases absorbance at fixed concentration and wavelength. Whether that helps depends on the useful measurement range and the sample. It is not a prediction of improved fluorescence performance.
Technical basis: IUPAC Gold Book: Beer–Lambert law. General absorbance principle and its conditions; not a measurement of this cell.

How the structure differs from a conventional cell
The chamber extends in one direction while remaining narrow in the transverse direction. That creates room for the longer sample path, at the cost of a wider footprint and a different support arrangement. The 17.5 mL listed nominal capacity is separate from the working liquid level needed to cover a particular beam.

Keep the optical direction clear on the drawing
If 50 mm is the optical requirement, mark that direction, the useful window and the beam centre before changing the outside shape. We can review the walls and holder contacts around it. Reducing an outside width without identifying the optical direction can remove space required by the sample path.
For observation from another side, show the source and receiver positions. Identify which faces must stay clear and which may contact the holder. This gives a more useful design brief than asking for additional polished faces without showing how they will be used.

Three checks for the proposed setup
- Beam direction. Distinguish the 50 mm and 10 mm paths and mark source/receiver positions.
- Wide support. Locate the body without blocking the required faces.
- Working level. Check beam coverage, available sample and access for the separate lid.
Check the holder with the full-width outline
Include insertion, lateral support and lid removal in the fit check. Evaluate the chosen optical direction with the appropriate blank and sample for the method. The lid is not a verified sealed closure, and the Molded 0.01 grade label is not a substitute for a specified dimensional or optical acceptance test.
What changes if I use the 10 mm direction instead of the 50 mm direction?
The optical path, cell orientation and source/receiver layout must all match that direction. Check the holder contacts and working liquid level as well; the two listed paths do not imply an automatic switching arrangement.
Engineering dimension reference
The reference records known external dimensions and configuration notes. Internal geometry, tolerances and operating limits still require a project-specific specification.
